HI| Memorandum 2025-1A, issued by Hawaii’s Acting Insurance Commissioner, addresses all insurers offering property insurance in Hawaii, in light of the continuing recovery challenges faced by policyholders affected by the August 2023 Maui wildfires. The memo highlights concerns about time limits in insurance policies for completing repairs or replacements to qualify for full replacement cost benefits and notes many policyholders’ difficulty in complying due to long-term rebuilding delays and inadequate storage options. The Commissioner strongly encourages insurers to voluntarily extend or be flexible with these timeframes for affected policyholders in wildfire-impacted areas, urging direct contact between policyholders and their insurers to discuss possible extensions. The Division will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
