Alaska Division of Insurance Enacts Moratorium on Policy Cancellations in Storm-Affected West Coast Communities

AK| Bulletin B25-08, outlines emergency regulatory actions taken by the Alaska Division of Insurance in response to the October 2025 storms impacting the west coast of Alaska. The bulletin directs insurers to suspend policy cancellations and nonrenewals in affected areas, ensuring consumers are not penalized for late premium payments during the disaster period, and encourages insurers to work with policyholders to resolve payment issues. Additionally, health insurers are required to suspend network restrictions for prescription drugs, allow for extended medication supplies, and ensure coverage for retail pharmacy purchases if mail-order services are disrupted.

Main Points

  • Insurers must temporarily suspend policy cancellations and nonrenewals in disaster-affected areas, and work with policyholders to resolve premium payment issues during the emergency period.
  • Health insurers are required to suspend network restrictions for prescriptions, allow for longer medication supplies, and ensure coverage for retail pharmacy purchases if mail-order services are disrupted.f
