Alaska Insurers Reminded to offer Fair Treatment to Consumers Following the 2025 Storm Impacting the West Coast

AK| Bulletin B25-07 issued by the Alaska Division of Insurance addresses fair treatment measures for consumers affected by the 2025 storm on Alaska’s west coast, following a disaster declaration by the Governor. Insurers are required to provide relief to policyholders, particularly through premium grace period extensions of at least two weeks, and by adapting healthcare network requirements to ensure uninterrupted access to pharmaceutical supplies. The Division further emphasizes prompt and reasonable claims investigations, as well as the application of in-network benefits for prescriptions even when non-network pharmacies are used, with extended medication coverage allowed for impacted consumers until October 31, 2025.

Key Points:

  • Insurers must extend premium payment grace periods and work proactively with affected policyholders to maintain coverage.
  • Health insurers are expected to suspend pharmaceutical network requirements, pay prescriptions at in-network levels, and cover up to 90-day medication supplies for those impacted.
  • Insurers are reminded to investigate claims promptly and fairly, and to provide clear explanations for claim decisions in accordance with state law.
