ID| The Idaho Department of Insurance Bulletin No. 26-12 notifies insurers writing commercial or property business that House Bill 562 (2026) amends Idaho Code §§ 41-1842 and 41-2401 to lengthen policyholder notice periods effective January 1, 2027: for commercial property, liability, and multiperil policies, nonrenewal notice and for-cause cancellation notice under § 41-1842(3)(a)(ii)–(vii) both increase to 60 days, while the 10-day nonpayment notice, the 30-day notice for premium or coverage changes under § 41-1842(5), and the 30-day notice for cancellation within a policy’s first 60 days remain unchanged; for standard fire policies under § 41-2401 — which encompass all personal homeowners, dwelling fire, and renters coverage — both nonrenewal and cancellation notice periods become 60 days (10-day nonpayment notice unchanged), and each such notice must now include a statement of reason that the Department interprets as requiring enough particularity to tell the policyholder the specific basis for the decision, with generic references to underwriting or company guidelines expressly insufficient. The revised periods apply to policies issued or renewed with an effective date on or after January 1, 2027, and insurers must file conforming forms with the Department before that date; the bulletin is an agency interpretation of existing law rather than new law.
