Illinois Insurance Department Urges Companies to Protect Federal Workers Amid Shutdown

IL| The Illinois Department of Insurance issued Company Bulletin 2025-17 in response to the federal government shutdown that began October 1, 2025, calling on property, casualty, and automobile insurers to adopt protective measures for federal employees facing financial hardship, such as implementing a moratorium on cancellations and nonrenewals linked to non-payment of premium and extending deadlines for necessary property repairs; insurers are urged to continue coverage for at least 30 days or the duration of the shutdown, and grant further extensions when compensation delays persist, all without requiring filing policy changes, in order to protect over 153,000 affected Illinois consumers from losing critical insurance coverage during this crisis.
