IN| Indiana Department of Insurance Bulletin 280 calls on insurers to provide Indiana policyholders directly affected by the August 11–16 severe-weather, derecho, tornado, and flooding events a 60-day moratorium on policy cancellations or nonrenewals arising from disaster-related premium nonpayment, with late-payment penalties suspended; insurers are expected to apply the relief retroactively to August 10.
The moratorium is a payment extension—not a premium waiver—and insurers are requested to offer reasonable payment plans or additional time once it ends. Cancellations and nonrenewals for other legally permissible reasons may still proceed subject to statutory notice requirements, although carriers should consider potential disruption to mail delivery and policyholder access to notices.
The Department also grants Indiana resident licensees, certificate holders, registrants, premium-tax and surplus-lines premium-tax filers a 60-day grace period for renewals, cancellations, filings, and continuing-education obligations, waives related late penalties and the $10 duplicate producer-license fee, and will accept free temporary address changes and provide affected parties copies of Department records without charge.
