Pennsylvania Insurance Department Announces CPI-U Adjustment for Autism Spectrum Disorders Coverage

PA| The Pennsylvania Insurance Department Bulletin, Doc. No. 25-408, pertains to Autism Spectrum Disorders coverage and the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) adjustment. The notice highlights the legal requirements for insurers to cover autism services under mental health parity provisions.

Key Points:

  • CPI-U Adjustment: The CPI-U increased by 2.9% for the year preceding December 30, 2024, resulting in an adjustment of the maximum benefit for autism services from $50,445 to $51,908 per year for policies issued or renewed in 2026.
  • Legal Framework: The adjustment is based on Section 635.2(b) of The Insurance Company Law of 1921 and Act 62 of 2008, which initially mandated coverage for autism services.
  • Mental Health Parity: Insurers are expected to continue providing autism coverage in compliance with the mental health parity provisions of the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, as adopted into Pennsylvania state law.
